SONY UNVEILS QUALIA ULTRACOMPACT DIGITAL STILL CAMERA WITH BREAKTHROUGH TOUCHPAD TECHNOLOGY
Incorporates World's Smallest 2.0 Megapixel Auto Focus Lens
NEW YORK, Apr. 21, 2004 - Achieving a feat in miniaturization, Sony Electronics unveiled today the QUALIA 016 digital still camera measuring about the size of an index finger. This highly advanced camera incorporates the smallest available class-AF lens unit available, as well as new technologies like a thin lithium-ion battery and high packaging density to achieve a body size of W 2.7" H 0.94" D 0.66" and weight of a mere two ounces.
"The QUALIA 016 is a combination of cutting edge technology, beautiful design and unprecedented form factor. These qualities are indicative of the QUALIA experience which will undoubtedly translate upon initial touch and feel of this camera," said Kenichi (Ken) Sugawara, Sony Electronics' QUALIA U.S. executive vice president.
In order to optimize use of the camera body's limited space a newly developed touch-pad is incorporated to manipulate the camera settings with ease. By touching or sliding a finger on the touch-pad, users can switch for example between digital zoom, still image capture, and playback.
To stay true to the miniature form factor and produce the best picture quality, the QUALIA 016 is equipped with just two mega pixels but uses a larger 1 /2.7" CCD, allowing the user to take high quality digital still images.
To achieve the clearest image, four consecutive images are captured in one shot and combined via digital imaging control technology to reduce noise and create the best image. Brightness is also automatically adjusted when conditions are too dark.
The QUALIA 016 is made of forged aluminum for strength and a special paint of blue glass flakes under a resin coating to provide both feel and durability. The lens unit and cover glass feature virtually scratch-proof sapphire glass.
The camera has a built-in .55" LCD display, records in JPG or TIFF, has 4x digital zoom, and uses Sony's tiny Memory Stick Duo flash memory card to store photos. The camera and each of its parts is stored in a sleek carrying case which includes a flash unit, timer remote control unit, video output unit, wide angle lens, telephoto lens, viewer, lithium battery and battery charger. The camera comes with a Memory Stick Duo card (64MB).
