SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES
Daily Operations
- Sony is working aggressively to lessen the energy consumption of most of its products and reduce energy-use and waste from its daily operations.
- The Sony Electronics headquarters in San Diego is running on 100% wind power and the new headquarters, currently in construction, is expected to be LEED certified when it opens this summer.
- We set a goal of a seven percent reduction in facility emissions by 2010, with the year 2000 as the baseline, and are right on target.
Packaging
- Target for the using recycled material is 12% for overall resources in products and packaging.
- Non-VOC vegetable oil-based ink used in some of our packaging and print materials
- 85% post-consumer recycled content used in Sony-created documentation in many cases
Providing End-of-Life Solutions
- Sony’s national Take Back Recycling program, the first-ever national recycling program of its kind, has helped consumers to recycle more than 14 million pounds of electronic waste since it’s inception in Sept. 2007.
- Recycling of electronics waste not only conserves finite resources but also saves energy in processing when compared to processing virgin materials.
- There are more than 270 permanent drop-off locations throughout the US were Sony-branded products can be recycled for free.
- Sony does not export hazardous waste. In 2007 we signed a pledge with the Basel Action Network (BAN) committing to responsibly recycle our electronic waste, audit our recycling vendors and expand the scope of performance requirements to include more international requirements. We require our recyclers to sign the pledge as well.
- Green GloveSM in-home TV removal service: Tapping the momentum of Sony Electronics’ national Take Back Recycling program, in fall 2008, Sony Style added the Green Glove service as an enhancement to their Premium in Home Delivery service.
- Specialists will deliver, unpack and set-up the TV, plus one video source, in the location specified by the customer and will take the old TV for free eco-friendly recycling.
- GreenFillSM recycling service: On Apr. 22, 2009, Sony launched GreenFill as part of the national Sony Take Back Recycling program.
- Nation’s first in-store, drop-box solution sponsored by a consumer electronics manufacturer
- Consumers can properly dispose of any brand of small or portable electronics for free in GreenFill e-Recycle Drop Boxes provided at participating retailer locations.
- Example of items accepted: cell phones, cameras, small laptops, portable music and gaming devices, etc.
- 81 retail stores have joined the program to-date. Several applications are currently being processed.
- Larger Sony-branded electronics can be recycled for free through our national network of more than 270 recycling depots. Other brands will be accepted for a small fee. For locations visit www.sony.com/green. This information is provided on the drop box.
- VAIO Trade-in Program - will be reintroduced for consumers in the coming months. Sony disposes of old electronics responsibly and the consumer may receive a rebate towards new Sony technology, for the value of your trade-in. If the product has no trade-in value, Sony will help recycle the Sony product.
