SONY ENTERS TWO NEW CATEGORIES WITH ITS DEBUT OF EXTRA BASS HEADPHONES AND HIGH-END PC SPEAKERS

LAS VEGAS (CES Booth # 14200), Jan. 7, 2009Sony today introduced an array of new audio accessories, including Extra Bass hea dphones and multi-media speakers for PCs, that offer playback flexibility and enriched sound.

“We’re continuous leaders in the audio space because we use superior technology without compromising style,” said Andy Bubala, director of marketing for audio accessory products for Sony Electronics. “From our new Extra Bass headphones to our new speakers, both of these attractive lineups deliver the incredible sound quality Sony is known for.”

Digging Deep

With the introduction of five Extra Bass products, Sony is launching a new series of headphones that have design and sound that will be especially appealing to customers who enjoy hip hop and club music.  For premium playback of these intense beats, the MDR-XB family of headphones have been specially engineered with exclusive drivers that can offer rich playback in the lower frequencies, as well as new sound-sealing structures to minimize sound leakage.  This allows for intense yet superior bass sound, without even needing a battery to gain the effect.  In addition to top performance and quality, the Sony Extra Bass headphones boast attractive, eye-catching designs.

Three over-the-head models (MDR-XB300, MDR-XB500 and MDR-XB700) have king sized ear cushions for maximum listening comfort and offer large, uniquely developed XB diaphragm driver units ranging between 30-50mm for dynamic bass playback..  With wider range frequency response, these luxurious headphones have a power handling capacity of 1500mW to 3000mW, depending on the model.

The collection will also include earbud style headphones (MDR-XB20EX and MDRXB40EX), featuring hybrid silicone earbuds in small, medium and large sizes for a more custom fit.  These models have 9mm and 13.5mm size driver units, respectively, for booming bass and 100mW of power handling capacity .

The Extra Bass series will be available in February, with headphones costing about $50 (MDR-XB300), $80 (MDR-XB500) and $130 (MDR-XB700), and earbuds costing about $40 (MDR-XB20EX) and $60 (MDR-XB40EX).  Both styles come with 1.2m cords and carrying pouches.

Quite an Earful

For beautifully designed, great-sounding multi-media speakers, Sony is launching a new line of high end PC speakers with superior sound quality.  A great complement to all of Sony’s audio and computer products, the series includes four models that are perfect for anyone who stores music libraries or enjoys DVD and gaming entertainment on a PC.

Realizing the importance to have high quality PC speakers to immerse yourself in music, movies or computer games, Sony developed the slim size SRS-Z50 pair speakers with bass reflex duct, the three-way SRS-Z100 pair speakers with bass boost, the SRS-D25 2.1 speaker system with subwoofer for strong bass and the SRS-DF30 2.1 speaker system with built-in FM tuner for stylish, powerful music listening.  While all of the speakers offer headphone out with power on/off and volume control in varying total output power levels, unique features include VAIO color matching in the SRS-D25 (black, red, pink or white) models and the SRS-DF30’s FM tuner.

The SRS-Z50 speakers will be available in March for about $60, the SRS-D25 for about $70, the SRS-Z100 for about $100 and the SRS-DF30 will be available for about $200 in March as well.
