FROM IMAGE CAPTURE TO DATA ARCHIVE, SONY ELECTRONICS EXHIBITS FULL RANGE OF MEDICAL IMAGING SOLUTIONS AT RSNA 2004

CHICAGO (RSNA Booth #4338) Nov. 28, 2004 - At the 2004 Radiological Society of North America annual meeting, Sony Electronics is exhibiting a full range of medical-grade digital imaging products and peripherals ranging from image recording to advanced archiving solutions.

Visitors to the Sony booth will experience an environment that demonstrates the latest in capture, display, printing, storage and archiving products to be used as critical components in a fully integrated image management solution for radiology professionals. Product highlights will include Sony's smallest, fastest black-and-white and color printers, as well as new storage and archiving options.

"Sony draws from all of its areas of expertise in the electronics marketplace, including imaging, printing and storage, to produce products that are optimized for the medical environment," said Steven Blum, vice president of the medical systems division for Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Business Solutions Company. "We've designed our RSNA exhibit to show one of the widest ranges of imaging peripherals specifically for the radiology profession."

New Printers Offer Highest Speeds, Small Form Factor and Seamless Integration

At the center of Sony's printer display will be the popular FilmStation dry film imager, which will be shown in several different configurations that demonstrate its flexibility for use in a variety of clinical and office environments. Two new solutions for centralized DICOM printing will be exhibited, one utilizing the exclusive FilmLink feature built-in to the FilmStation unit to make the printer its own DICOM interface, and the other a prototype external DICOM interface with planned connectivity to all Sony digital medical printers.

Sony is also introducing the UP-897 series of black-and-white A6 ultrasound printers. The series' analog model (UP-897MD) and digital model (UP-D897) both feature an ultra compact size (6 inches x 3 inches x 9 inches) and unprecedented two-second print speed. The UP-D897 also has a high-speed USB 2.0 digital interface for rapid data transfer.

Designed to provide an easy upgrade for facilities using the Sony UP-895 series the UP-897 series will employ the same media. The new printers have also been designed with footholes that match those found on many ultrasound printers currently on the market, allowing them to easily fit into existing configurations.

Also being introduced is the work-in-progress Sony UP-D72XR digital film imager, which is designed for use with mobile c-arm units and dental X-ray systems. Incorporating Sony direct thermal printing technology, this model enables images to be reproduced with a resolution of approximately 300 dpi, and offers support for both 8 x 10-inch blue thermal film and thermal printing paper. The UP-D72XR also includes a new USB 2.0 digital interface.

The UP-D55MD digital A5 color printer will also be highlighted in the Sony booth. This model implements dye-sublimation technology and a high-speed USB 2.0 digital interface to produce photo-like quality images in approximately 20 seconds.

Sony Showcases the Latest in Storage and Archiving Solutions

Sony is unveiling its plans for a high-capacity Network Attached Storage (NAS) system capable of storing and backing up large amounts of data on either optical discs or tape media. The system consists of a main server, a cache server and a tape library. Utilizing data management middleware to prioritize the file access process, this product has the ability to store files that are commonly accessed in the main server, while less frequently accessed data is relegated to the cache server, or ultimately, to the tape library. This system can be configured with an application server to facilitate remote access to data.

As part of its array of storage solutions, Sony will be showcasing its Professional Disc for DATA (ProDATA) optical storage format. Based on Sony's blue-violet laser technologies, ProDATA retains all conventional advantages of disc media, such as high-speed random access and rewriteable and write-once, read only (WORM) options. At the same time, this format offers a massive (23.3 GB) storage capacity and a high-speed (11 Mpbs read/9Mbps write) data transfer.
