OPENING CEREMONY AT UCSD FOR CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH FACILITY FEATURES SONY SXRD 4K RESOLUTION PROJECTOR

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 1, 2005 - A ceremony to unveil a cutting-edge research facility here at the University of California-San Diego featured equally cutting-edge projection technology, in the form of Sony's new 4K SXRD ™ (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) large venue projector.

The new research headquarters of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) on the UCSD campus officially opened its doors at a dedication ceremony on Friday.

This technologically advanced facility provides a unique collaborative environment to support multidisciplinary research. The building contains specialized spaces and labs, including a nanoscale fabrication laboratory, a wide array of circuits labs, material characterization labs, new-media arts facilities, reconfigurable research neighborhoods, and a rooftop "antenna garden."

The new Sony SRX-R110 SXRD projector was used during the event to demonstrate the SXRD technology's capability of displaying intricately detailed images at extremely high resolution, which is a key requirement for the new facility.

"As part of our OptIPuter project, we often bring together large groups of members of the scientific community to examine and visualize data sets in such fields as earth science or brain imaging," said Tom DeFanti, visualization director for Calit2. "The Sony SXRD 4K system has proven to be the only technology available that can project these types of images, to an audience in a large venue, at extremely high resolution and in precise detail, which is especially important for critical review and educational discussion purposes."

Sony's SXRD 4K digital cinema projector features 4096 x 2160 pixels to produce nearly four times the resolution of current high definition TV displays. Complementing the projectors' outstanding pixel resolution is a high contrast ratio for deep blacks, outstanding picture uniformity and superb signal processing, including 4:2:2 to 4:4:4, which yields better tonal reproduction.

The SXRD 4K technology is also capable of displaying multiple high-definition images in single-, dual- or quad-screen mode, making the projectors well suited for use in lecture halls or auditoriums. The projectors' quad-screen mode is also appropriate for simulation as well as command-and-control applications where multiple, simultaneous views are required for monitoring and surveillance.

The six floors of the Calit2 building house close to 900 faculty, researchers, staff, and students working on diverse research initiatives bringing together engineering, medicine, science, and the arts.

Following the formal program, guests had the opportunity to explore and tour the 215,000-square-foot facility.
