LAS VEGAS, March 13, 2007 – Sony is expanding its SXRD™ 4K digital cinema projection family with the debut of a new 10,000 ANSI lumen version at ShoWest here this week.
The new projector, model SRX-R210, is designed for digital projection in movie theaters and joins the recently introduced 18,000 ANSI lumen SRX-R220 model as the second exhibition-specific entry in Sony’s line.
The SRX-R210 model incorporates many design elements of Sony’s first-generation 10,000 ANSI lumen SXRD projector, but adds several new features like single Xenon lamp operation, keystone masking for standard and curved screens, and an integrated secure enclosure for playback system as with the SRX-R220.
“We listened to exhibitors and incorporated their feedback to develop the right projection system for their operations,” said John Kaloukian, director of Sony Electronics’ professional display group. “In the movie theater industry, there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. That’s why it’s critical to have products that address a range of screen sizes and throw distances.”
The SRX-R210 projector can display 2K and 4K content on screens that are about 40 feet wide. Kaloukian said Sony is already working to place the unit with national and regional movie theater chains for beta testing.
The SRX-R210 model uses the same lenses as the company’s SRX-R110 and SRX-R105 (10,000 and 5,000 ANSI lumen) projectors. The new model also features identical auto zoom and auto focus functions. It uses a single 3.0 or 2.0 KW lamp to reduce operating costs.
Other key features of the SRX-R210 projector include:
- Color management software for easy color balance and alignment;
- Automated zoom lens position for multiple-format screen fills;
- Automated light output adjustment to maintain 14 foot-lamberts brightness at screen;
- Image masking with enough range for a 10-degree down angle; and
- Single-button power up for both projector and server operations.
Sony’s LMT-100 4K Media Block and Screen Management System complement these projectors to offer exhibitors a “plug-and-play” projection system.
The media block is a combined server and decoder containing all the components required to ingest, decode and play digital content. It features 16 audio channels. Files comprising feature content, as well as trailers and policy notices, are stored in an attached Redundant Array of Independent Disk storage unit. Users can control the device through either a local computer program using Sony’s Media Terminal Control, or through the Sony Screen Management System.
The SXRD projector’s 4K resolution is derived from its 4096 by 2160 pixel matrix, or about 8.8 million pixels, allowing it to deliver four times the resolution of today’s high-definition televisions used in home theater systems.
The new projector is expected to be available this summer, with the suggested list price to be determined closer to that time.
