Since 1960, Sony's U.S. operations and employees have committed their resources and time to charitable causes and community efforts. The company strengthened its philanthropic commitment in 1972 with the establishment of the Sony USA Foundation and a corporate program to supplements the day-to-day contributions of Sony's businesses and employees.
Sony's corporate philanthropy efforts in the United States are directed toward contributions to the communities where the company has a significant presence. The Community Affairs Department coordinates programs within Sony Electronics Inc. Sony is dedicated to serving our communities through the support of organizations in areas of education, health and welfare, minority affairs, civic efforts and arts and culture.
Guidelines for Giving
Sony responds to grant seekers and institutions that bring commitment and innovation to strengthening education at the primary and secondary school levels, with consideration also given to selected higher education initiatives. While positive consideration is given to efforts that promote literacy and basic educational competency, the company seeks to apply its resources toward the development of technical and scientific skills for tomorrow's workforce.
- In the area of Health and Welfare, Sony will continue to support local United Way activities as its primary means of funding health and social services
- In Minority Affairs, Sony will continue its efforts to support institutions which promote equal opportunity, advancement and recognition for disenfranchised groups
- The company will continue to support a wide-range of worthy activities, including a Matching Gifts Program which matches contributions made by full-time Sony employees to educational institutions, hospitals and cultural organizations
Grant Application Procedure
Sony welcomes requests for support throughout the year within the guidelines and program areas set forth. We do not consider multi-year requests for support.
There is no grant application form. Requests must be submitted in writing and should include the following information:
- A brief, written description of the organization on its official letterhead, including its legal name, history, activities, purpose, and proof of 501 C (3) status as an organization that is not a private foundation
- History of previous support from Sony Corporation of America, Sony Electronics Inc. or any other Sony business unit
- The amount being requested
- A description of the purpose for which the grant is requested
Review and Evaluation of Grant Requests
Sony carefully reviews requests and supporting materials. If the request is within the Corporate Giving guidelines and program priorities, and available funds permit consideration of this request, Sony may ask the organization to provide more complete information before a decision is made. Notification of grant request approval or rejection will be made in writing within one month of receipt of all proposed materials. We do not respond to telephone follow-ups. We appreciate your cooperation.
Since the corporation receives funding requests far in excess of its annual grants program budget, it must often decline support to worthy organizations and programs. Such a response does not reflect in any way a negative appraisal of the prospective organization or the value of its services.
